Irda hosts Iskandar Malaysia cooking competition
JOHOR BARU: Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) recently hosted a cooking competition with a twist, as dishes prepared must only represent the "Flavours of Iskandar Malaysia".
The competition, held at KFCH International College here in Johor Baru, sought to enhance the relationship of Malaysia's unique multiracial community through food.
Food is a common interest among Malaysians, regardless of their race, beliefs or culture, Irda Federal Commissioner Datuk Benjamin Hasbie said.
"Food and cooking is a platform which many can relate to, thus we believe, through this cooking contest, we are also promoting racial unity and harmony."
There were five groups, with two members each, who whipped up their own creation of 1Malaysia -- the flavours of Iskandar Malaysia.
The cooking contest attracted more than 100 spectators, who cheered their favourite teams.
Team Mawar Hitam members Syed Abd Rahman Syed Darar and Mohd Zulhilmi Abu Bakar were crowned winners and took home a trophy, RM500 and a hamper.
The duo's winning dish was their creation called "Chicken Wantan Percik".
The chicken was diced and cooked with sesame seed oil, coriander leaves and wrapped in wanton.
The runners-up were Bakers Duo -- Mohd Naim Mohamed and Mohammad Noor Hafetz Mohd Shariffuddin -- who each took home a medal, RM300 and a hamper.
Raja Zahrin Shah Raha Chik and Saiful Adilin Abd Wahab won the third prize, winning a medal, RM200 and a hamper.
The other two participating teams went home with consolation prizes of RM100, a medal and a hamper.
